The movie “Silence of the Lamb” originally was ment to have the title “Silence of Elam”. It was also supposed to be set in Southwestern Iran, just east of Mesopotamia. In the original story a group of Calvinist Monks was trying to convert the Elam population into christianity, and we the audience could follow their efforts and success when in the final scene the whole population of the Elam city of Anshan sang “My Sweet Lord” in chorus.
The monks were changed into a female FBI agent and the conversion of the Elam population was changed into a chase after a murderer and a kidnapper in order to suit the American audience better. Also a romantic scene in which one of the monks kissed another monk was replaced with a massmurder, due to the graphic nature of the kissing-scene.
